This course aims at ushering the students into a new language in an efficient way. Emphasis will be attached to the correct pronunciation and a solid basis in vocabulary and grammar. This course provides the students with instructions in German listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translating. It also gives them background information about the German nation. The texts are closely related to the students’ daily life on campus, with new words and complex grammatical structures carefully knit into them. Besides classroom instruction, this course also employs such methods as dialogues and oral reports so as to produce capable and confident public speakers in German. Since there are no separate courses of listening at this phase, listening exercises are also provided in this course.

This course is intended to cultivate the students’ ability to communicate correctly and appropriately and deepen their understanding of the politics, economics, and culture of the German speaking countries. The students will learn how to speak properly in such situations as visiting a friend, asking for directions, shopping, making a phone call, making an appointment, and lodging at a hotel. Also the students are to learn how to make a continuous speech on a familiar topic. The students are encouraged to play an active role in the classroom activities, including pattern drills, dialogues, and discussions.

This course helps the students to obtain a better knowledge of German language based on what they have learned in the freshman year. The students are supposed to acquire a correct pronunciation, an enlarged vocabulary and a solid foundation of the German grammar. They are supposed to improve their ability to communicate both in oral and in written form so as to get prepared for the third and fourth year of study in this major. The choice of topics, determination of teaching objectives, and sequencing of new words are made by taking into consideration the national conditions, cultural characteristics, and the social, economic and political reality of the German speaking countries so that the cross-cultural communication ability is cultivated.

This course intends to provide an academic framework for senior students and to lay a foundation for the preparation of the BA thesis. This course aims at enabling the students to have a good command of the working techniques: note taking, preparing and making oral reports, and writing and revising research papers. Classroom training will be offered to improve the comprehension and command of note taking skills. The forms and characteristics of German oral reports will be presented to the students who will also be taught how to choose the appropriate topics, to collect and use materials, to outline, to add supplementary information and to make use of auxiliary instruments. The students will also be taught how to adopt suitable research methods, to outline, to quote and to use related materials for their research papers. The students will be requested to write cooperatively a course paper.

This course intends to introduce the students to the principles and methods in interpretation, and to raise the students' sensitivity to interpretation. This course aims at developing the students' abilities to understand oral texts and to express themselves bilingually through interpretation practice. Note-taking techniques will be presented, emphasizing the combination of note-taking and memorization, and urging the students to learn how to concentrate so that they can interpret utterances and whole texts. The students will be trained to develop their strategic competence so as to possess the fundamental qualifications of interpreters. Classroom activities will be directed to the various topics frequently encountered in interpretation, such as tourism, culture, history, economic development, business talks, and speeches in conferences. Drills will be systematically organized according to their nature and levels of difficulty. Unidirectional activities will be combined with bidirectional activities.
