This course has its basic coverage of the origin, development and social function of the three religions that have world-wide influence: Christianity, Islamism, Buddhism, and their linkage between the Chinese culture and society. First, an introduction that deals with the basic theories concerning religion and its position and function in the human civilization. The major part starts with Judaism, which shares the same historical roots with Christianity, whose development in different stages will be explained in detail, including a discussion of the role the Christian missionaries in China played in the context of the East-West cultural exchange. Following Christianity, the birth and development of Islamism will be introduced, plus the Islamic Movement, and the cultural characteristics of Islamism in China. The introduction of Buddhism includes the social background in India during the formation period of Buddhism, its basic doctrines, the historical conditions that enabled Buddhism to merge with the Chinese culture, different schools of Buddhism in China and their influence on the Chinese society and the everyday life of the Chinese people.
