This course systematically introduces the development of modern Chinese literature during the past three decades. Topics cover the artistic trends involved, literary movements and literary genres in various periods. Emphasis will be laid on the analysis of representative writers and works. The objective of the course is to develop a deeper understanding of the core values of different schools of ancient philosophy and the development of their ways of thinking so as to comprehend the spiritual gifts of Chinese culture. Specific topics include Mercy by Confucianism, Inaction of Taoism, Conformity of Mohism, Punishment of Legalists” Strategies of Military Strategists, and Concept and Entity of Logicians. The discussion on every specific topic consists of an introduction to core values, and the reading and analysis of original literature, with the focus on the influences of different schools on the development of Chinese society and history. A comparative perspective will be adopted to draw upon the features of these theories and examine their significance for current society.

6. Course Description:
Through a close study of classic texts in women’s literature, students will be guided to understand women writers’, especially contemporary Chinese women writers’ life attitudes, gender awareness, and aesthetic pursuits, so that students can grasp the basic features of women’s literature. The course will focus on the reading of classic works in women’s literature, covering those in modern and contemporary Chinese women’s literature as well as in ancient Chinese women’s literature and foreign women’s literature; along with the basic theories about women’s literature and the history of women’s literature. Both literary theories and gender theories will be adopted to approach the texts, centering upon the elaboration of the life attitudes, gender awareness and aesthetic pursuits embodied in the creation of women writers, as well as paying attention to the comparison between female and male writers, and that between different women writers, through which the ideas and arts of the texts will be perceived.
