Application Guide for Confucius Institute Scholarship 2019 at Beijing Language and Culture University


For the purpose of cultivating qualified Chinese language teachers and facilitating the promotion of Chinese language and culture, the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) launches “Confucius Institute Scholarship” (CIS). Based on Application Guide for Confucius Institute Scholarship 2019, released by Hanban, Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) worked out following application guide :

1. ELIGIBILITY

All applicants shall be:

a) non-Chinese citizens;

b) in good physical and mental condition, with good academic performance and conduct;

c) committed to the teaching and international promotion of the Chinese language;

d) between the ages of 16 and 35 as of September 1st, 2019. Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall not be over 45, while undergraduate student applicants shall not be over 25.


2. SCHOLARSHIP TYPES AND QUALIFICATIONS

A. Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)

The program commences in September 2019 and provides scholarship for a maximum of two academic years. Applicants shall hold a Bachelor’s degree, and have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution or relevant proof upon completing their studies in China. 


B. Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL)

The program commences in September 2019 and provides scholarship for a maximum of four academic years. Applicants shall hold a high school diploma and a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 4) as well as 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).  


C. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study

The program commences in September 2019, and provides scholarship for a maximum of 11 months. International students currently studying in China are not eligible.

      1. Chinese Language Study

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 in HSK test (Level 3    level).

      1. TCSOL

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 in HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.


D. Scholarship for One-Semester Study

The program commences either in September 2019 or late February 2020, and provides scholarship of a maximum of 5 months. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visa are not eligible. Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.

E. Special Four-week Program for Confucius Institutes

An HSK test score is required. It provides a four-week scholarship. Organized and applied by a Confucius Institute with 10-15 participants per group. Applicants holdingX1 or X2 visas are not eligible. Students will be placed into different level classes according to their Chinese language proficiency and choose one of the slots below to study with other international students. If the group forms one class on its own, commencement date can be negotiated.


Jun. 27th to Jul. 24th, 2019 (4-week)

Jul. 25th to Aug. 21st, 2019 (4-week)

Aug. 1st to Aug. 28th, 2019 (4-week)

Dec. 19th,2019 to Jan. 15th, 2020 (4-week)


3. Coverage

The Confucius Institute Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance (four-week study students are excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.


4. APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Online registration will be available from March 1, 2019 on the Confucius Institute Scholarship website (cis.chinese.cn). Please log on to search for recommending institutions and host institutions, upload application materials online, track the application progress, comments and results. Scholarship holders need to confirm with BLCU to go through the procedures of studying in China, print out CIS certificate online, and register at BLCU at the designated date and time as per the letter of admission.

The application deadlines are

    1. April 20th (for the summer programs)

    2. May 20th (for those commencing in September)

    3. September 20th (for those commencing in December)

    4. November 20th (for those commencing in the end of February 2020)

Hanban will complete the scholarship review and publish the results three months before enrollment of the scholarship winners..


  • CHINESE BRIDGE AWARD RECIPIENT POLICIES

Chinese Bridge winners who have been awarded the 2019 “Confucius Institute Scholarship Certificate” shall log onto the scholarship website and submit documents to BLCU upon presentation of their CIS certificates. Please contact chinesebridge@hanban.org for inquiry.


5. Application Documents for Confucius Institute Scholarship

for all applicants

  1. A Scanned copy of passport photo page.

For the student under the age of 18, their parents should entrust a foreigner residing in China or a Chinese residing in Beijing with the student’s guardianship, and provide notarized guardianship guarantee statement.

  1. A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity)

  2. A Reference letter by the head of the recommending institutions. Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall provide the proof of employment as well as a reference letter by the employer.

  3. A certification of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation)


  • Degree Programs Application Documents

i. For Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of OtherLanguages(MTCSOL)

    1. A scanned copy of an official undergraduate transcript.

    2. 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide a work contract with a teaching institution or relevant proof upon completing their studies in China.

    3. A study plan (including CV, education background, Chinese language proficiency, personal statement on research ability, research proposal, and career plan) above 800 Chinese words. This should be scanned and uploaded in Education Background section.

ii.For Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL)

a) a certification of official transcript for the highest education


Note:

  1. Applicants for one-semester and four-week program scholarship who withhold visas X1 or X2 are not eligible. Passport pages will be checked upon registration. Those who withhold visas X1 or X2 will be deprived of scholarship. All the consequences caused by providing false documents shall be borne by applicants themselves.

  2. Additional documents will be required by BLCU on certain conditions.


6. OTHERS

  2. Degree students shall accept the annual assessment under the Annual Appraisal Procedures of Confucius Institute Scholarship

  3. Those who failed to register on time, failed to pass the health assessment, dropped out midway and/or suspended will be deprived of scholarship.

  4. Each applicant can only apply for one scholarship provided by Chinese government. Multiple applications for different scholarships will be considered invalid and such applicants will be disqualified from scholarship.
