6.Course Description:
The course trains students’ ability in listening through intensive and extensive listening practices. It starts with the practice in pronunciation, helping students distinguish the ambiguous sounds and words so that they are able to grasp the features of Japanese pronunciation. Students will learn to pick up key words, main ideas of the given passage, retell the passage they have heard, and understand the intentions of the speakers in the conversations. The conversations are normally classified into different types so that students are able to understand them based on the overall structure. Some knowledge of Japanese culture is also offered as the background of the training.

This course provides a general picture of interpretation skills and introduces to students basic techniques in Chinese-Japanese and Japanese-Chinese interpretation. Materials of varied contents are selected to train students in basic skills such as repeating and retelling. Etiquette in doing interpretation is also eintroduced, and interpretation trainings are conducted to improve students’ ability to meet emergent situations. This course, targeted at the undergraduates of Japanese major with sufficient proficiency of the language, aims at imparting the basic theories and skills of simultaneous interpretation and building up student’s capacity in the field work of interpretation. The teacher approaches the whole course in a gradualist manner, beginning with consecutive interpretation, followed by progressively intensified training in shadowing and sight interpretation before transiting into the phase of simultaneous interpretation. The teacher will comment on a large number of interpretation cases together with the relevant theories and skills. As such, students’ mastery of the language can be further enhanced together with their capacity of interpreting the original texts in an accurate and complete manner. Students will gain deeper insights into the language and cultural differences between Chinese and Japanese, know about basic self-training methods and acquire the basic etiquette of interpretation, so that they can be further qualified for the actual interpretation mission.
