6.Course Description
The aim of this course is to enhance students’ understanding of the traditional Chinese painting, especially the issue of modeling. Students are required to copy classic landscape paintings and teaching drafts by modern painters, in the process of which the basic language of landscape painting, i.e. outlining, brush texturing, rubbing, dotting, and coloring, and the basic methods of describing images are taught. Slides are employed to teach the landscape painting’s history, schools, theories, and features of and requirements on the painting materials. The copying classes integrate individual tuition with teacher demonstration and make comments and summaries on works by stage.

The course intends to help students further understand and grasp the brush texturing skills, brush employing rules and painting layout patterns by famous landscape painters, and the important elements in landscape painting production like the contrast between black and white. Based upon this, the course aims to help students command the particular representation means of landscape painting. Copying classic paintings from Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties is a main focus, which is supplemented by individual tuition, teacher demonstration, and comments, in order to constantly improve students’ practical skills in artistic creation.

Based on students’ understanding and mastery of landscape painting rules, this course intends to help students improve their ability to voluntarily arrange and select source materials of various kinds and their ability to master the landscape painting methods.
