 This course aims to develop the first-year students
 basic ability for listening comprehension. It demonstrates a variety of subjects, involving politics, economy, education, public hygiene, transportation, and science and technology, which are mostly presented in the form of reports, dialogues and short passages. Each subject is followed by different type of questions, such as dictation, blank filling, multiple-choice questions, question answering, etc. These materials are to build up an elementary series of vocabularies and phrases used in daily life and to highlight the characteristic features of background knowledge of the English-speaking countries. In addition, the course also provides some VOA and BBC radio programs of different context so that the students may have a direct contact with the most standard pronunciation and intonation of the native speakers. The main purpose of this course is to help students overcome listening difficulties and develop and improve students listening comprehension. Whats more, focus of training is put on the ability to grasp main ideas or plots and the ability to make analysis and inference from the materials heard.

 The goal of this course is to refine the student

The focus is on different styles of writing such as exposition, description, comparison/contrast, definition, narration, etc. Through examining the writing techniques of various native writers, the student will attempt to adopt these skills into his/her own writing.  This course aims to better students
 understanding of the differences underlying the two literary languages as well as the literary textual matrix. By providing students with real opportunities in literary translation, the course will strengthen students strategic awareness and resourcefulness in the process of translation. It includes three modules covering English and Chinese poetry, prose and fiction, and drama, with emphasis on such topics as the translation of imagery in English and Chinese verse, and more importantly, stylistic representation of character depiction, idiolect, spatial and temporal relations and so on, all of which involve some of the fundamental differences between Chinese and English. Classroom activities will be organized alternatively between lecture and group discussion, textual analysis and translation practice and revision.

 The course is to enhance the students

The students are required to analyze the stylistics of the texts, enlarge the vocabulary in the related areas, and absorb the relevant knowledge so that they can employ what they have learned to effectively obtain the scientific and technological information, and carry out translation of the relevant texts is such areas as computers, multi-media, modern communication, and medicine.

   This is an applied translation course. Its main tasks fall upon two areas: one is to inform the students of the stylistic characteristics of legal English, namely, lexical, grammatical, sentence pattern and contextual features; the other concentrates on the principles, standards and methods of legal translation based on stylistic analysis. It will enable the students to get a better understanding of the similarities and differences as well as the shift between the Chinese and English legal texts. Students will be able to fulfill assigned tasks in legal translation with comparatively natural language use and acquired translation skills through in-class lectures, discussions, after-class readings, research projects and abundant practice.
