Cradle of Sinologists and Ambassadors

BLCU has become the academic base for the study of language and culture and the cradle for diplomatic talents cultural envoys. Its graduates spread all over the world, of whom  many are government ministers, parliament speakers, distinguished sinologists and senior diplomatists such as ambassadors, ministers and counselors in China. But all of them are cultural envoys, playing important roles in promoting mutual understanding and cultural exchanges between China and the world.



Home to the World's Largest Chinese Language Program for International Students

BLCU delivers the world's largest Chinese language program, a broad range of other languages and culture programs, as well as other humanity and social sciences programs with the aim to enhance the global and cross-cultural education for our undergraduate students in order to empower them to be leaders in their prospective careers. The university's faculty members take pride in their innovative approach to language study in which they combine the practice of language, the spirit of cultures, and the teaching and learning processes associated with the understanding and application of languages.



The Robust Team of Chinese Teachers

Beijing Language and Culture University has over 300 full time Chinese teachers, including 110 engaged in the Chinese Language undergraduate program. 40% of the teachers have an advanced title, 50% have a PhD, and 80% have overseas teaching experience.

Since the founding of BLCU in 1969, we have sent Teachers of Chinese as a Foreign Language to 80 countries and regions covering most of Asia, Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Oceania (Australia). At a national level, BLCU is an important base for sending out Chinese teachers, and among long term positions, BLCU has sent more teachers than any other university in China.




The Highest Quality of Education

The quality of Chinese as a Foreign Language education at Beijing Language and Culture University has received widespread acclaim both within China and abroad. At present, BLCU has establish 7 nationally-featured majors (Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Chinese language, English, Chinese Literature, Japanese, Arabic, French), 4 Beijing-level featured majors, and 10 university level featured majors. Two teaching teams were awarded the national rank of “Superior Teaching Team” and three teaching teams were awarded the “Superior Teaching Team” rank by Beijing municipality.




Best Bachelor’s Program in Chinese

As a central base of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, the school established the first Bachelor’s program in Chinese for foreign students in 1975, also offering the first Bachelor’s program in “Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language” to face the challenge of having a Bachelor’s program in Chinese for foreign students. As such, the Ministry of Education voted it the only nationally featured major in its field in the country.


For the Bachelor’s program in Chinese, the school holds a semi-annual enrollment (March and September) and  graduation (January and July) system where are all the courses are divided into two tiers (upper and lower) and held in tandem. Also, the incoming students are dynamically placed into classes based on their Chinese level in order to best satisfy the requirements of differentiation and personalization.


The school offers a selection of more than 100 courses to satisfy foreign students demand for diversity, and implements an education system based on credits enabling the freedom of choice. From the second year, foreign students majoring in Chinese can choose electives from a secondary specialty, including international economics and trade. The credits are recognized by both programs, and if the student earns enough credits, he or she can be awarded a Literature and Economics double degree (or double major).

BLCU has gradually become a multidisciplinary international university where its core strengths of language education and research has led to the further development of related subjects. BLCU offers an ever-increasing range of specializations, covering subjects such as Literature, Economics, Law, Engineering, History, Education and Management. There are 26 undergraduate programs, all of which are open to foreign students.


BLCU not only focuses on using high quality education to enable foreign students to both master theoretical knowledge and practical skills, but even more importantly on embracing the humanities. By increasing the all-around education of foreign students, BLCU is striving to create the next generation of cultural ambassadors of peace,global citizenry,and youth leadership.
