Class Hours and Credits

1. The college adopts a course credit system. At the end of each semester, all students who finally pass the examination of a certain course will be granted credit points for that course.

2. The number of credit point is normally equal to the number of class hours per week.

3. All students in lower elementary level (初级 上) are required to study 20 hours of compulsory courses per week. Those in upper elementary level (初级 下) are required to study 18 hours of compulsory courses and 0-2 hours of elective course per week.

4. All students in the intermediate level are required to take 6 hours of compulsory courses per week and an additional 6–14 hours of elective courses per week.

5. All students in the advanced level are required to take 6 hours of compulsory courses per week and an additional 6-12 hours of elective courses per week.

This is a compulsory course that provides comprehensive language skill training. The student will be equipped with fundamental communication skill via lectures of basic Chinese vocabulary and grammar as well as comprehensive practices of listening, speaking, reading and writing. There are 2 formats of classes for this level.

Elementary Chinese A (compulsory): This is a primary lecture class, including basic Chinese vocabulary and grammar learning.

Elementary Chinese B(compulsory): This is a practice class, reviewing and practicing what are learned in Elementary Chinese A. Practical skills on listening, speaking, reading and writing comprehension will all be trained.

This is a comprehensive language skill training class composed of Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing. It is aimed at improving communication skills of the students.

This is a listening comprehension and speaking skill cultivation class. Through listening, the student will learn about Information and common knowledge essential to daily living in China. Through speaking, the student will learn to verbally convey the information and solve various kinds of problems that may be encountered in their daily living. This will enhance the student’s practical communication skill.

Elementary Chinese Reading and Writing

This is a reading and writing skill cultivation class. It aims at advancing the student’s reading ability and teaches basic reading strategy and skill. From the reading content, the student will learn about the complex structure of Chinese writing and short articles which will be used to improve the student’s basic and practical writing skills.

This is an integrated skills classes that aims to improve Chinese skills through frequent practice and various exercises including word practice, summarizing grammar points and various integrated drills，deepening and strengthening students’ grasp of Chinese words and grammar, understanding the rules of how to distinguish and memorize Chinese characters, consolidate and broaden vocabulary, improve reading ability and skills，improve one’s ability to implement Chinese knowledge，while you can grasp that how to deal with the Chinese Proficiency Test Level 4(HSK 4) at the same time.

This is listening and speaking training class aiming at students’ understanding and expression ability in daily communication, the comprehension of Mandarin Chinese without knowing critical new words and difficult grammar, and the frequent use of learned words and sentence patterns in daily life.

This is a reading skills training class. By training the ability and skills in passage reading, students’ reading skills will be improved. And the ability to deal with general obstacles in reading, inquiring the required information, and knowing the synopsis will all be enhanced in this course.

This is a spoken language skill training class. It will let students know some common-used sentence patterns and professional terms on economics and trade. And students’ abilities on spoken language and the ability to stay alert in communication will all be improved. This is a writing skill training class, aiming to make students write with correct words and grammar, even with some Chinese rhetoric. And the writing ability will be improved after the professional training.

This is a spoken language skill training class. The hot issues mainly revolve around social and cultural life in China and China’s social and economic development. And by discussion on those issues, students will gain the overall grasp of the oral Chinese expression. And on that basis, the fluency and proficiency of spoken language will be enhanced.

Human Culture and Geography in China (Lower Intermediate)

This is a culture knowledge explanation class. In this course, students could get a general knowledge of Chinese geography, Chinese history, Chinese culture and some local conditions and customs. And this general knowing will be deepened after a visit led by our college during semester.

This course aims at students’ ability to use Chinese in their study and life. Also, it helps students to adapt to Chinese Proficiency Test Level 5(HSK 5) at the same time.

This course analyzes common synonyms in HSK (Level 5), as well as similar words with the same part of speech and related meaning. This course will explain the language knowledge, test questions and improve the Chinese language ability. Based on HSK, this course takes similar words with high frequency and similar meanings as the main line, so as to accumulate words, enlarge vocabulary, accurately use key words, understand HSK test questions, master some related problem-solving skills, and specifically tackle the difficult points in the exam.

The course involves dozens of commercial subjects, such as Business Management, Marketing, Investment Financing, International Trade etc. And it aims to make students master the words, expression and the knowledge related to commerce. In addition, students could complete the verbal and written communication task. A comprehensive ability on Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing in commercial circumstances will be enhanced.

Language is a part of culture, and culture is a part of history. Understanding Chinese history can help you better understand Chinese culture: why it is like this way versus not like that way. Why Chinese people's thoughts, ideas, morals, traditions, and social situations are like this way versus not like that way. Why there are countries whose culture has similar aspects to Chinese culture and others whose culture is very different from Chinese culture. After learning about Chinese history, perhaps you will better understand why Chinese culture is like this way versus not like that way. History influences culture, and culture influences language: why do Chinese people say the same thing in this way but not in that way. Why Chinese characters and calligraphy are the way they are, and why many Chinese idioms have strong ties to Chinese history. Chinese food, clothing, housing, and transportation, Chinese holidays, characteristics of food culture, styles of human interaction, and ways of doing things, all of these are very much connected to the development of Chinese history. Understanding Chinese history will help you understand Chinese culture more fully, which will then help you use Chinese more authentically and appropriately.

This course will introduce you to Chinese history through a wealth of historical documents and information. There are many different presenting ways to learn, such as: audio, text, pictures, maps, numbers, video, audio, etc. The difficulty level is between HSK level 4 and 5. If you are an intermediate level student, then you can learn the language and learn about history at the same time. If you are an advanced level student, then you can learn about history while discussing Chinese history with your teacher and classmates. For the sake of understanding the general Chinese newspapers and periodicals, it pays the emphasize on the ability of skip reading, guess reading and fast reading, also the abilities of summary, extraction, and finding useful information are all the essential qualities for a qualified reader.

Business Case Analysis

This course provides professional knowledge on business cases. There will be 15 classical cases involving Enterprise Strategy, Marketing Management, Organization Management, Human Resource Management, Manufacturing Management and Enterprise Culture Management, etc. After getting the general meaning of the cases and mastering some basic vocabularies, there will be some discussion and analysis on business knowledge and extracurricular cases.

China’s National Conditions (Economy)

This course provides professional knowledge on China’s national condition. It will introduce special topics, such as Land and Resources, Population and Nation, Economic Situation, Industry, Agriculture, Secondary and Tertiary Industries, Finance and Insurance, Environmental Protection, People’s Life etc. After these learning, students could know more about Chinese natural resource and economy conditions and accumulate more words especially on economy. Besides, students’ reading speed, the ability of speaking and understanding will all be enhanced. Moreover, students could have a thorough discussion with the professional knowledge they learned in Chinese.

Chinese Idioms

This course provides language knowledge, introducing meanings and applications of commonly used Chinese idioms especially the four characters idiom. And the course will also introduce some folk adages, idiomatic phrases, and allegorical sayings. Through various teaching forms and classified explanations, students will learn and know more than 700 terms of Chinese idioms.

Translation (English-Chinese)

This course provides practical training on Translation and Interpretation. By comparison, students will get a better knowledge of the similarities and differences between Chinese and students’ mother language (or medium language). And after the advanced comparison of languages and cultures, students could know and learn Chinese from a higher perspective, and improve the capability of Translation and Interpretation.
