2026 BLCU International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Application Guide

To meet the growing international demand for Chinese language teachers, facilitate Chinese language education around the world, and support the professional development of Chinese language teachers, the Center for Language Education andCooperation (CLEC) has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the Scholarship) for eligible Chinese language teachers outside of China.

The applications to Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) in particular for such a - scholarship should follow the guidelines below, a version with reference to the Application Guide for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship 2026 released by CLEC. Confucius Institutes, independent Confucius Classrooms,selected HSK test centers, foreign educational institutions, Chinese language  teacher training programs / Chinese departments   at foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language teaching, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (hereinafter collectively referred to as Recommending Institutions) may recommend outstanding students and in-service Chinese language teachers to further their studies in international Chinese language education and related programs at Chinese universities (hereinafter referred to as Host Institutions).


1. ELIGIBILITY

  1. Beanon-Chinesecitizen;

  2. Be friendly to China, have no criminal record, abide by the laws and regulations ofChinaand the rules and regulations of theHost Institution;

  3. Be in good physical and mental health,be in good academic and behavioral standing;

  4. Be interested in Chinese language education and related work;

  5. Be aged between 16 and 35 years on September 1, 2026. The maximum age limit for in-service Chinese teachers may be extended to 45, but those who apply for a scholarship for Bachelor’s degree shall be younger than25 under most circumstances.


2. CATEGORIES AND QUALIFICATIONS


  1. Scholarship for Doctor’s Degree in International Chinese Language Education

The program commences in September 2026, and the scholarship is provided for amaximum of four academicyears.

Applicants shall hold a Master’s degree in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, linguistics, international Chinese language education, or education-related disciplines. Applicants shall have a minimum score of 200 on the HSK Test (Level 6) and 60 ontheHSKKtest (AdvancedLevel), or passed the HSK Test (Level 7). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide an employment contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or proof to the same effect.


  1. Scholarship for Master’s Degree in International Chinese Language Education

The program commences in September 2026, and the scholarship is provided for amaximumof two academicyears. Applicants shall hold a Bachelor’s degree. Applicants shall have a minimum score of210 on the HSK Test(Level 5) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).Priority will be given to applicants who may provide an employment contract with ateachinginstitutionuponcompletingtheirstudiesinChina orprooftothesameeffect.


  1. Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Chinese Language and Literature (International Chinese Language Education)

The program commences in September 2026and the scholarship is provided for maximumof four academicyears.

Applicants shall hold senior high school diploma and have minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who may provide an employment contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies inChina or proof to the same effect.


  1. Scholarship for One-Year Study Program

The program commences in September 2026, and the scholarship is provided for amaximum of eleven months.

  1. For the area of International Chinese Language Education, applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 on the HSK test (Level3), and an HSKK test score is required.

  2. For the area of Chinese language and literature,applicants shall have aminimum score of 180 on the HSK test(Level4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

  3. For the area of Chinese Language Study, applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKKtest score.


  1. Scholarship for One-Semester Study Program

The program commences either in September 2026 or March2027and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of five months.

The areas of International Chinese Language Education, Chinese language and literature are available. Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level3), and an HSKK test scoreis required.


  1. Scholarship for Four-Week Study Program

The program commences either in July or December 2026, and the scholarship is provided for a maximum of four weeks.

For the areas of Chinese Language Study, traditional Chinese medicine, Taiji culture, applicants are required to provide HSK test scores. 

The program may be organized and applied for by recommending. institution with 15 participants or more per group. Before the trip, a detailed study plan shall be madein consultation with host institutions and such plan shall be submitted to CLEC for review and approval.


3. COVERAGE

International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance (four-week studystudents are excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.


4. APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Online registration will be available from March 1, 2026 on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website (http://www.chinese.cn). You may search for Recommending Institutions and Host Institutions; submit application materials online; and track the application process.The successful applicant must confirm with the Host Institutions to go through the procedures of studying in China, print out the scholarship certificate online, and register at the Host Institution on the designated dateas per the Letter ofAdmission.


TheApplication Deadlines (BeijingTime):

Apr 15, 2026 (for programs commencing in July,2026)

May 15, 2026 (for  programs commencing in September,2026)

Sep 15, 2026 (for programs commencing in December,2026)

Oct 31, 2026 (for programs commencing in March 2027)


CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications. Decisions will be based on HSK and HSKK levels and scores, geographical distribution,and other factors.

The results will be published about three months before the program starts.


5. POLICIES REGARDING IN-SERVICE CHINESE LANGUAGE TEACHERS AND CHINESE BRIDGE WINNERS


  1. In-ServiceChineselanguageTeachers:

In-service Chinese language teachers may be given priority to admission under the same conditions if they provide proof of employment and recommendation from their employer.


  1. ChineseBridgeWinners:

Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions may submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to BLCU directly at the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website.

6. APPLICATION MATERIALS FOR INTERNATIONAL CHINESE LANGUAGE TEACHERS SCHOLARSHIP


For All Applicants:

  1. scanned copyof passportphoto page;

  2. A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-yearvalidity);

  3. referenceletterbytheheadof the recommendinginstitutions.

  4. A certificate of the highest education diploma (or proof of expected graduation.Students with proof of expected graduation must submit formal certificate of the highest education diploma before the starting and registration time of BLCU.)


- For Degree Program Applicants:

1. For Applicants of the Scholarship for Doctor’sDegree

  1. An official transcript of the highest education study (transcript of every semester is needed).

  2. 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors or experts with equivalent professional and technical titles in relevant fields.

  3. A 3000-word personal statement in Chinese (including knowledge of the intended field of study and research proposal).

  4. The acceptance letter of the supervisor in relevant fields.

  5. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide an employment contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or proof to the same effect.


2. For Applicants of the Scholarship for Master’s Degree

  1. An official transcript of the highest education study (transcript of every semester is needed).

  2. 2 reference letters from professors or associate professors.

  3. A study plan (including CV, education background, Chinese language proficiency, personal statement on research ability, research proposal, and career plan) above 800 Chinese words.

  4. Priority will be given to applicants who may provide an employment contract with a teaching institution upon completing their studies in China or a proof to the same effect.


3. For Applicants of the Scholarship for Bachelor’sDegree

a. An official transcript of the highest education study (transcript of every semester is needed).


- Other Required Application Materials

  1. In-service Chinese language teachers shall provide proof of employment and a reference letter from the employer.

  2. For applicants under the age of 18, their parents should entrust a non-Chinese citizen residing in China or a Chinese residing in Beijing with the student’s guardianship, and provide notarized guardianship guarantee statement.


- Note

  1. Those who provide false documents, or conceal the visa record in their passports when applying for the scholarship, will be canceled from the scholarship once verified. All the consequences caused by providing false documents shall be borne by applicants themselves.

  2. Additional documents will be required by BLCU on certain conditions.


7. OTHERS

  1. In principle applicants who had awarded the one-semester program and the one-year program scholarships within three years will not be admitted to the same type of scholarship.

  3. Degree students are subject to the annual assessment according to the Annual Assessment Procedures of the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship.

  4. For enrollment and other matters, please contact BLCU.

  5. Students who fail to pass the pre-enrollment medical examination, withdraw fromschool before completing the program, fail to register at the university without prior permission,or suspend their studies will be disqualified for the scholarship.

  6. Each applicant can only apply for one scholarship provided by Chinese government. Multiple applications for different scholarships will be considered invalid and such applicants will be disqualified from scholarship.
