V. Training Objectives

The purpose of practical Chinese intensive course is to provide short-term intensive Chinese language and Chinese culture education to overseas students through rich and practical language and culture courses and practical activities, so as to maximize the comprehensive application of Chinese language and the cognitive and understanding ability of Chinese culture for learners of different starting points in the shortest time, and cultivate international talents who know China and are friendly to China for the whole world.

Specific training objectives for each level are:

1. Training objectives for primary level

  • Language: Master about 2,000 words and 200 grammar points.

  • Skills: General ability of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Can retell a long passage fluently and completely, can use a small number of more complex sentence patterns. Be able to communicate briefly on basic topics such as daily life, study and work, and complete daily social communication.

  • Culture: Feel the charm of China's excellent traditional culture and contemporary culture, have a strong interest in and certain understanding of Chinese culture, and have a preliminary awareness of cross-cultural communication.

  • Chinese for special purposes: master the basic vocabulary of Chinese for special purposes, and have the most basic Chinese communication skills for relevant jobs.

2. Training objectives for intermediate level

  • Language: about 5,000 words and 400 grammar points.

  • Skills: Have certain listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and general translation skills. Can read Chinese newspapers and general literature works, basically understand the general content of radio and television news. Be able to conduct rich, fluent and appropriate social communication on the study and work topics of some professional fields. Be able to express opinions on in-depth topics, with basic standard and proper language expression, complete and clear semantics, and the ability to use Chinese flexibly.

  • Culture: Have a deep understanding of Chinese excellent traditional culture and contemporary culture, and a preliminary understanding of Chinese revolutionary culture. Love China, be friendly to China, and have certain cross-cultural communication skills.

  • Chinese for special purpose: language ability to handle general work tasks under relevant scenarios.

3. Training objectives for advanced level

  • Language: Master about 7,000 words and 500 grammar points.

  • Skills: Good listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and basic professional translation skills. Be able to conduct standard, fluent and appropriate social communication on broader and higher-level topics. Master the idiomatic spoken and written forms of Chinese. Have strong oral and written language organization and expression skills. Can understand a variety of situations in a variety of topics slightly complex language materials, including personal work and professional language materials, and can grasp the key points, with a certain degree of summary and analysis.

  • Culture: Know and be friendly to China, have a profound appreciation and understanding of Chinese traditional culture, revolutionary culture and contemporary culture. Can sense the longevity, uniqueness and value of Chinese culture, and have a true, three-dimensional and comprehensive understanding of China. Have high cross-cultural communication skills.

  • Chinese for special purpose: language ability to handle relatively complex work tasks under relevant scenarios.

VI. Basic Framework of the Training Programme

(I) Credit granted for completion of courses: 30 credits.

(II) Completion score: 60 points or above for major courses (comprehensive and oral Chinese) and 60 points or more for at least two secondary courses.

(III) Total credit hours: 1020 credit hours/510 credit hours

(IV) Total number of teaching weeks: one academic year (34 weeks)/one semester (17 weeks)

VII. Main Courses

Practical Chinese intensive classes are divided into three grades and five levels, namely, preliminary class A and class B, intermediate class C and class D, and senior class E. According to the training direction and objectives, all grades have been provided with highly targeted and rich compulsory courses and elective courses, including not only language skills courses, but also special-purpose Chinese courses. The main courses are as follows:

Class A: Elementary Comprehensive Chinese I, Elementary Chinese Speaking I, Elementary Chinese Listening I, Elementary Chinese Characters, Standard Chinese Pronunciation, Language Practice

Class B: Elementary Comprehensive Chinese II, Elementary Chinese Speaking II, Elementary Chinese Listening II, Language Practice

Class C: Quasi-Intermediate Comprehensive Chinese, Quasi-Intermediate Speaking Chinese, Quasi-Intermediate Listening Chinese, Quasi-Intermediate Reading Chinese, Language Practice

Class D: Intermediate Comprehensive Chinese, Intermediate Speaking Chinese, Intermediate Listening Chinese, Intermediate Reading Chinese, Intermediate Chinese Listening and Speaking, Language Practice

Class E: Quasi-Advanced Comprehensive Chinese, Quasi-Advanced Speaking Chinese, Quasi-Advanced Listening Chinese, Quasi-Advanced Reading Chinese, Chinese Social Culture, Language Practice

Courses of Chinese for special purposes at all levels include:

General Chinese in International Workplaces, Business Chinese, Cultural Tourism Chinese, Science and Technology Chinese, all of which have three levels and five levels.

VIII. Main Practice Links and Time Arrangement

In addition to regular language teaching, the Practice Chinese Intensive Class also includes language practice classes, including daily language practice activities once a week and short-distance language practice activities in Beijing two to three times per semester.

1. Daily language practice activities: The daily language practice activities once a week are divided into preliminary level (AB class), and intermediate level and advanced level (CDE class). The language practice activities of the preliminary class include going to a restaurant to learn to order dishes, meeting Chinese friends, class activity day, Chinese contest, Chinese knowledge contest, etc. The language practice activities of the intermediate and advanced class include social investigation, class activity day, etc. The specific activity time is every Friday afternoon. In addition, there is a one-day cultural experience day in each semester.

2. Short-distance language practice activities: The Practical Chinese Intensive Class organizes students to carry out short-distance language practice activities in Beijing for two to three times in each semester, such as visiting the scenic spots and historic sites - the Great Wall; experiencing the excellent traditional Chinese culture - Lao She Teahouse; appreciating the landscape of Chinese ancient and modern gardens - the Garden Museum.

IX. Certificate of Award

  • The Completion Certificate will be issued by Beijing Language and Culture University to those who have completed the prescribed courses, qualified attendance rates and passed the examination and general assessment during one academic year or one semester.

  • For those who fail the general assessment of one (including one) or more major courses, or who have been largely absent from classes and have been disqualified for taking part in the examinations but have not yet been disqualified for the programme, the School of Applied Chinese will issue a “Certificate of Study”.

  • Those who have been disqualified for the programme because of high absenteeism will not be able to obtain any certificate of study.

  • Students who terminate their studies for any reason and are absent for less than the prescribed number of hours may apply for a certificate of study upon approval. The learning time of the certificate of study shall be limited to the termination time.

  • Upon completion of the course of study, those taking the examination for completion of the course can obtain the “Transcript of Completion”.
